Surveys worldwide often have not collected information about past alcohol use, “but for a lot of people, there’s a pattern where they drink more heavily when they’re young and moderately as they get older,” he explained. Similarly, for esophageal cancer, the researchers zeroed in on a type called squamous cell carcinoma, which is the only type known to be triggered by alcohol consumption. “This may make the estimates of alcohol-related cancers lower than previous studies, but they’re more precise,” said Dr. Abnet. How Can the Public Be Made Aware of the Cancer Risk From Alcohol?
It is possible, however, that for breast cancer and other types of cancer related to disturbances in female hormone levels, alcohol may act by altering the metabolism and blood levels of female hormones, such as estrogen (Longnecker 1994). Moreover, a recent study suggests that the association may be limited to women with a family history of breast cancer (Vachon et al. 2001). Alcohol consumption also has been linked to cancers of the large bowel (i.e., colon and rectum) in both men and women and to breast cancer in women, although these associations have not yet been proven unequivocally. The association between alcohol consumption and other types of cancer (e.g., stomach, pancreatic, prostate, and endometrial cancer) is still controversial (International Agency for Research on Cancer IARC 1988; Doll et al. 1999).
